Footballer plays again after a knee surgery

Dear Artemis Team & Dr. Ashok Goel,

First things first – my apologies for writing my experience after 4 months of surgery. Second – another apology that this email has become a bit lengthy.

footballer I have few friends who have now become doctors. But for the first time in my life, a doctor has become my friend. Honestly, I am not just happy but completely satisfied by being associated with Artemis and Dr. Ashok Goel. Right from counseling till my discharge, I have experienced bliss in every sense. The courtesy of the support staff, the ever ready helping nature of the nurses, the friendly behavior of the doctors and the smoothness of the back office activities have made my stay delightful. Above all, Dr. Ashok Goel has never made me feel that I will be going through such a major surgery of ACL Re-construction. His way of explaining the problem and also explaining the modus operandi of the surgery, the importance he shows not only to the problem but also attaching due importance to the emotions of the patient and its relatives, were exemplary.

Case Study - ACL Injury Cured by Surgery

Here is one of the testimonials by one of Sr. Ashok’s patient:

Hapy Patient with Dr. Ashok Goel

Hapy Patient with Dr. Ashok Goel

Shilpa Das an HR by profession, 27 years old, I want to share my amazing experience of my lifetime with the entire team of Artemis and of course with Dr. Ashok Goel.

My friends used to tease me a lot for gaining extra pounds around my stomach. That was the reason why I joined a local gymnasium in order loose those excess weight. On the very first day of my aerobics classes, my right knee got twisted. It pained a lot the entire day but ignorantly I continued with my regular office and other works. I consulted a general physician who told me to have some rest and said that this is a very common injury and gets cured within 2-3 weeks.

Unfortunately within a couple of week of this incident I slipped from my office stairs and got hurt on the same knee. The pain was unbearable and I was sure some major injury has happened. This time I consulted an orthopedic surgeon in Mumbai who with the help of a MRI scan of my knee confirmed that my ACL has broken. He scared me so much about the surgery that I simply ran out of the hospital (limping of course). I was very scared to undergo a surgery there. I have had heard a lot about Artemis from Mr. Abhik Moitra who is a close friend of mine.

Common Knee Problem Symptoms

Here are some of the symptoms that mark the beginning of problems in the knees

Popping: Popping and snapping within the knee is quite common, and often not a symptom of any particular problem. When the pops or snaps are painless, there is usually no problem–the bigger concern is when these sounds are associated with pain. A pop is often heard or felt when a ligament, such as the ACL, is torn.

knee-pain-symptoms Crunching/Grinding: A sense of grinding or crunching is most often associated with bone grinding against bone once the cartilage is worn away. This is commonly found in arthritis. Patients who are young (under 50 years old) seldom have arthritis that will cause these severe symptoms, unless there has been a severe injury to the knee in the past.

Locking: Locking is a symptom that occurs when a patient cannot bend or straighten their knee. The locking can either be due to something actually blocking motion of the knee (this can occur when a piece of cartilage wedges within the joint) or when pain prevents the patient from moving the knee. These two causes must be differentiated, as something physically caught in the joint should be evaluated in a timely manner. Often injecting the knee with numbing medication can help determine the cause of locking.

Common Execrises to Keep the Knee Fit

knee_exerciseQuadriceps Set:

Sit on the edge of a chair or lie down with your knee straight. Tighten the muscle on top of your thigh by straightening your knee as much as you can. Place your hand on top of your thigh to feel the muscle tighten. Hold the muscle tight for a count of 5. Relax and repeat 5-10 times. Try to do the exercise with each leg several times throughout the day.

Straight Leg Raise:

Lie flat on your back on either a bed or on the floor. Bend one knee, placing your foot flat on the bed. (This helps to stabilize your pelvis and protects your lower back.) Straighten the other knee. Tighten the muscle on the top of the thigh of the straight leg and slowly raise the entire leg 12 to 18 inches off the bed. Slowly lower the leg and relax. This exercise should only be done if you can keep the small of your back pressed against the bed with the abdominal muscles gently tightened. Repeat this exercise until you can do it 10 times, and then progress to doing 3 sets of 10 repetitions with a 1 to 2 minute rest between sets. This will improve its strength. Repeat with the other leg. Remember to bend the opposite knee, placing the foot flat on the bed. This exercise is isometric at the knee, but not at the hip.
